For those of your who have not collected that handout on Mid-Year Examination (English Language) Overview, here's the information you need to know. PLEASE take some time to look through all these information/tips/guides I've put together to prepare you for your first English Language examination in Secondary level. We've only got 1 more period before your Paper 1 exams, and there's a lot I need to do with you, so I'll really need the whole class's cooperation for class to start promptly and smoothly tomorrow. For those who think you still need some more help after tomorrow's lesson, I will still be in school until about 4pm. Do look for me should you find necessary. All the best in your preparation! I will see you all in class tomorrow. ----------------------------------- Before you begin… always… READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY!!! And MANAGE your TIME! Paper 1: 30 April 2009 (Thursday), 1100 – 1245 (1hr 45min) Section One: Free Writing (30 marks) - Personal Recount - Descriptive - Narrative - Exposition (haven't been taught, do NOT attempt if you're unfamiliar with the structure) NOTE: - Choose 1 from 6 given topics. (Tips: Choose your forte, not your interest!) - Advised to spend 55 minutes on this section. (Tips: Spend 1-2min deciding on the topic to choose, and the next 3-4min planning the skeleton of your essay.) - Word length: 250-300 words (You may refer to the CA you just did on Monday, you will have the same type of qns for your exam on Thursday.) Section Two: Situational Writing (30marks) - Informal Letter Writing NOTE: - Only 1 task given. Read the task information carefully before your start writing. - Advised to spend 45 minutes in this section. (Tips: Spend 1min to read the information carefully, the next 1min jotting down the format of the letter, and the next 2-3min planning the skeleton of your essay.) - Include ALL the points listed in the instruction. And you MUST have paragraphing! (Tips: Follow the sequence of the points given. And REMEMBER THE FORMAT!) - Word length: 150-200 words *** The use of dictionary is NOT allowed in this paper. *** Paper 2: 15 May 2009 (Friday), 0800 – 0940 (1hr 40min) Section 1: Grammar (10 marks) - 5 questions on simple past tense & past perfect tense (2marks each) (Please refer to the handout on 'Simple Past Tense' & 'Past Perfect Tense' I have just given out today.) Section 2: Cloze Passage (15 marks) - 15 blanks to fill (1 mark each) - Only 1 word for each blank (Tips: Spend a max. of 20min in this section. Use the first 3min to read the entire passage first before attempting to fill in the blanks. TAKE NOTE OF THE CORRECT FORM OF WORD AND TENSE! Read through the entire passage after you have filled in the blanks to check on the logical flow of the passage.) Section 3: Comprehension (45 marks) Passage A (19 marks) - Approx 10 questions, 1-2marks each - 1 Fill-in-the-blanks (5 blanks, 1mark each) Passage B (26 marks) - Approx 10 questions, 1-2marks each - 1 Choose-the-meaning (5 words, 1mark each) - 1 Fill-in-the-blanks (10 blanks, 1mark each) WHEN YOU ARE ASKED TO WRITE IN YOUR OWN WORDS, YOU MUST NOT COPY THE WORDS OF THE PASSAGE!!! (Tips: - Dedicate more time for Passage B than Passage A. Manage your time well. - Always spend the first 1-2min scanning through the passage(s) first, followed by a quick scan at the questions, and then a thorough read of the passage(s) before you start writing your answers. - Read the questions carefully, understand what they are looking for, bear in mind the answering techniques and guidelines. - Write your answers IN FULL SENTENCES and remember to SPELL OUT YOUR WORDS IN FULL.)
