Situational Writing (Informal Letter)

1.Format
-Date: Don't give me DD/MM/YYYY!
It has to be spelt out in full, ie. 20th April 2009.

-No indentation, ie. DON'T LEAVE 2-FINGERS SPACING FROM THE LEFT BEFORE YOU START.
Start straight from the left.
Leave additional empty lines between paragraphs to indicate paragraphing.

- Address: There should be AT LEAST 2 lines for addresses, ie.
Blk 123 La La Ave 7 (block no. and road name)
#01-01 (unit no.)
Singapore 123456 (postal code, spell SINGAPORE in full!)

or

No. 10 La La Road (unit no. and road name)
Singapore 987654 (postal code)

- Paragraphing: You MUST have paragraphing!!! Instead of merely writing one whole chunk of text in a single paragraph.

- It's an INFORMAL letter, you MUST start and end your letter with an opening and closure in a friendly (yet natural) tone. Think of how you would write for informal letter in Chinese.

Ways you could start your letter:
How are you? /How have you been? /How has it been for you? How are you enjoying your new school?

PLEASE take some time to look through all these information/tips/guides I've put together to prepare you for your first English Language examination in Secondary level.

We've only got 1 more period before your Paper 1 exams, and there's a lot I need to do with you, so I'll really need the whole class's cooperation for class to start promptly and smoothly tomorrow. Anyway, dear class, this's just a gentle reminder for you to complete your narrative writing composition and submit to me on Wednesday.

Title: The Class
Genre: Narratives (ie. a story; bear in mind: the purpose of a story is to entertain, keep it interesting!)
Remember:
- the 4 components of a narrative essay: Introduction/Complication/Complex/Resolution
- the essentials of a narrative essay: Characters/Settings/Plot/Problem/How the problem's resolved
Lenght of essay: 250-300words

If you still have problems starting the essay...
- Think of 1 single incident/episode that happened in the class (it can be something you imagined!), for eg. a fight? an accident? a quarel? or what?
- The characters: Who's involved?
- The settings: When and where did the incident happened?
- Why it happened? What happened? How did it happen? How was it resolved?

Any other problems? (I hope not! But..)

And so... I've been provided with the login to this little place you share your thoughts.
And so... I've been given the opportunity to share my own inputs for you too, and yes, uninterrupted.
:)

Perhaps to begin with,
some of you may be wondering, why 'Kit Kat' for the birthday babies?
I took the inspiration from my own Japanese teacher.
(Young, handsome, native Japanese man. Single. :p)
Now, the way Japanese pronounce 'Kit Kat' is really 'ki-to-ka-to',
which is similar to the Japanese phrase 'きっと勝つ' (pronounced: kitto-katsu),
meaning 'sure win'!
So, as a tradition, Japanese teachers usually give 'Kit Kat' to students before competition or examinations to symbolise their well-wishes, and not any other chocolate or candies.
You may also like to know that Kit Kat is really popular in Japan, with a wide variety of flavours, most not available in other parts of the world. :)

Now, I have set out to finish two tasks with the class today:
1. To complete the comprehension activity
2. To introduce you to Narratives and get you started on writing one

I personally hand-picked this comprehension passage (just like what I did for the Paulo Coelho's How to climb mountain passage), not just because a passage of such length will prepare you for the exam, but because of the content of the passage itself. I was indeed a little disappointed there wasn't much time for us to discuss deeper, but I do hope that most (if not all) of you will take home with you the moral of the story --- Do Not Assume. Or simply put, judging a book by its cover.

Anybody wants to share their thoughts here?

And of course, because I have to pause frequent during the lesson to keep the noise level down and to entertain queries, the lesson ended just after I started the supposed-2nd half of the lesson. :(

Now, for those of you who'll like to prepare yourself for the composition writing before we continue on Wednesday, just remember that a narrative essay is just a story (ie. novel, short stories. play, fable.. etc). And in a story, you'll need a plot (storyline), characters, and the setting (when and where the story took place). Your story should always address these 5Ws and 1H:
When/ Where/ Who/ What/ Why/ How
And as for the stucture of a narrative essay, you should have:
1. An introduction/orientation (introduces the character, settings, and hints at a potential problem which will build up in the later part of the essay)
2. Complication (a build up of the problem introduced in the introduction, more information on the characters/settings)
3. Climax (the problem reaches crisis point! a fight? an argument?)
4. Resolution (the problem is resolved - how? what is the moral of the story?)

Take these rough pointers with you, brainstorm how you will write for a title like "The Class".
- What incident do you want to write on?
- Where and when did it happen?
- Who is involved?
- What exactly happaned?
- Why did it happaned?
- How it happaned and how was it resolved? Any lessons learnt?

We will continue with this on Wednesday. And I certainly hope we will have a much more efficiently and fruitful lesson together, can we?

And yes, don't forget we will have a supplemantry class tomorrow (Tuesday), 2.30pm-3.30pm.
